Books I am reading. I have trouble reading just one book at a time. Literary ADD.

Blade SongIn my never-ending quest for another good urban fantasy series, I have stumbled across a lot of bad books, some ok books and very few winners.   I started Blade Song knowing that it had gotten pretty good reviews but considering how picky I am when it comes to UF, I turned the first page with much trepidation.

Kit Colbana owns a type of investigative agency but really she does most anything.  Business hasn’t been going well lately so when a local cat shifter shows up and offers her a job she takes it.  It doesn’t take long for her to realize that might not have been her best decision.  She is tasked with find the Alpha’s lost nephew, oh and if she doesn’t find him, the Alpha will have her killed.  No big deal.

Kit descends from a powerful ancient race, the aneira, but she is also half human.  People often underestimate her because they think she is simply human.  She has many gifts, that she does not let people see, that keep her alive.  However, after meeting the sociopathic Alpha she knows that if she doesn’t find the kid she just might not make it out of this one alive.

Along with the job comes a bodyguard, Damon, one of the Alpha’s enforcers.  To say Damon and Kit do not hit it off is a great understatement but he will not let her out of his sight.  Together Damon and Kit start to uncover more and more pieces of the puzzle of the lost kid.  What they find goes beyond one child and beyond what they thought the trouble could be.

Blade Song is one of those books where I won’t go into much detail about the plot.  I will give a general overview but I think it is best if the reader experiences the journey on their own.  I started the book with one thing in mind and ended it pretty surprised by the outcome.  This is no easy plot where you figure out the whodunit and why within the first 50 pages.  I was riveted as more and more characters were introduced.  We met the powerful vampire Jude who has a strange fascination with Kit, a mother witch Es, humans that are part of a sort of enforcement group, and so many other characters that add up to fast paced, un-put-downable book.

Kit is a damaged character.  Being half human made her the whipping girl for her family.  She suffered serious abuse her formative years and still has certain triggers that will set her off.  As the plot unfolds we also slowly learn about Kit and her struggle to overcome her past and the things that were done to her.  I loved her.  She was strong even in the face of such awfulness.

Blade Song had just about everything that I require in a book.  It was gritty, action packed, and had great characters.  I have heard the next book will rip my heart out so I am starting it knowing that I might need counseling afterwards.  Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson and Chess are three of my favorite UF book heroines and I  am crazy happy that I think I get to add Kit Colbana to that list.  Final grade- A-

Favorite Quote:

“What do you want?” I said.

“You.”  The man’s voice was blunt and honest.  “What do you think?”

“Fuck yourself. Sideways.”
